Prevention is the sum of our efforts to ensure healthy, safe and productive lives for all Americans. The goal of substance abuse prevention is to create the climate that keeps the many problems related to the use and abuse of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs (ATOD) from occurring. Prevention strategies may also be effective in delaying the onset of a disorder, reducing its severity or preventing relapse.

There is an immense cost to substance abuse
Annual deaths: 35,000 cirrhosis or liver disease, 10,000 motor vehicle deaths, 50% of all murders and suicides.
Money: $225 billion in health care, law enforcement and criminal justice.
Other: Birth defects, domestic violence, divorce, job loss, academic failure
Substance abuse is clearly among the most costly health problems in the US. Prevention is the most cost effective option!
